Post-start employer transition
Situation playbookHow to prepare a UK tenancy application after changing employer
After a job change, old and new records may both be valid for different periods. The task is to join those periods without presenting either as something it is not.

Short answer
Create a transition row with the former employment end date, new employment start date, source for each date and any overlap or gap. Group payslips and other records under the employer and period they belong to, then explain only the discontinuity a reader cannot infer. Keep an offer separate from work already completed and ask what additional material the recipient requires.

Keep in view
Stop when labels or dates cannot be traced
Pause if the employer name differs across records without explanation, if a pay period overlaps the stated end date, or if the application still describes the former role as current. Resolve the inconsistency from the best source or mark it as a question. Limit attachments to what the stated purpose requires.
Keep personal information relevant to the recipient's stated purpose and avoid adding sensitive material that was not requested.
RentFiles structures information entered by the applicant into an application PDF. It does not verify employment, reconcile payroll systems or assess the recipient's criteria.
Useful context
Anchor the application to the actual change
Record the former employer label and end date, the current employer label and start date, and the source supporting each point. Add the first completed current pay period when it exists. If there is a real gap or overlap, label it. Do not rewrite dates to make the transition appear smoother.
- Former role and final period
- Current role and start date
- First completed current record
- Gap, overlap or open question
Action plan
Choose evidence by period, not by visual consistency
Map every requested period to the employer record that actually covers it. Retain the recipient's wording if it asks for a set number of records, and ask how it wants a recent change handled. A former payslip can describe historic pay but cannot prove that the current role continues; a current contract does not turn historic earnings into current earnings.
Working checklist
Use a concise transition note only where needed
A useful note states the factual change, dates and how the attached labels correspond. It does not narrate personal reasons unless relevant and voluntarily supplied. When the first current payslip is not yet available, identify that narrow dependency and keep any requested interim material separate from the completed pay history.
Practical example
Example with one former and one current pay period
A fictional applicant left one employer near the end of May and began another in June. The summary groups May pay under the former employer, the signed current terms under the new employer, and the first June pay record under the new employer when issued. A short note explains the labels. It does not average both employers into a single recurring figure.
Questions
Common questions
Clear answers for the decisions people usually pause on.
Should I leave out payslips from my former employer?
Follow the requested period. Former records may be relevant to historic pay, but label them by employer and do not present them as evidence of current employment.
Can a new contract replace all earlier pay records?
It supports the terms it states, not completed pay periods from another job. Ask the recipient how it wants the recent transition documented.
How should I explain a gap between employers?
State the accurate dates and a concise factual context only when useful. Do not hide the gap or add unrelated personal detail.
What if the employer label differs between records?
Check whether the difference reflects payroll, trading or legal naming, then preserve the source labels and add a short traceable explanation.
Is this the same as applying before a job starts?
No. This page covers a role that has begun and the reconciliation of former and current records. The pre-start page covers future employment facts.
