How this is calculated
The calculator shows what is left each month after rent, any other housing costs you add and an optional savings goal, plus how much of your take-home income housing uses. It describes your own figures; it gives no comfort rating and no affordability verdict.
Formula
- Monthly rent = weekly rent × 52 ÷ 12, or fortnightly rent × 26 ÷ 12
- Housing total = monthly rent + other housing costs
- Left after housing = take-home income − housing total; left after savings subtracts the savings goal
- Housing share = housing total ÷ take-home income × 100
What it uses
- Only the figures you enter; blank optional fields count as zero
- Amounts rounded to cents and the percentage to one decimal place
What it does not tell you
- Whether the rent is comfortable or affordable for you: food, transport, debts and irregular costs are not included
- How an agent, landlord or referencing provider will assess an application; their methods vary
- Anything about gross income, tax or benefits; enter take-home income as you receive it
Sources
No external statistics, market data or thresholds are used. Every figure comes from what you enter.

Common questions
What does the rent comfort calculator show?
It takes the monthly take-home income you enter, subtracts rent converted to a monthly figure, any other housing costs you add and an optional savings goal, and shows what is left. It also shows housing costs as a percentage of income. There is no comfort rating: the figures are yours to judge.
Which costs should I include as other housing costs?
Whatever you want counted with the rent for this property: electricity, gas, water, internet, parking, contents insurance or strata levies you would pay. Leave the field blank to compare rent alone.
Is the result used when I apply through RentFiles?
No. This page keeps every figure in your browser and carries nothing into an application. If you allow analytics, we record pseudonymous usage events without income, rent, costs or results.
